2011 California Hall of Fame Ceremony and Entertainment

  
  
  
  

The California Hall of Fame needed fun, exciting and theme appropriate entertainment and support for this important event and their first call was to Hip Entertainment.  Thank you Hall of Fame team!  Today's event will be memorable, inspiring, and a great party!

Kicking off and closing the event is classic California party music with Rubber Biscuit. Excellent, quality musicianship and an authentic, very funny Blues Brothers show.

Sacramento's Memorial Auditorium  will be hopping tonight with Hall of Fame festivites and the arrival of the honorees. An insipiring and uplifting event - this year's inductees are proof that big dreams, perseverance and hard work deliver big rewards.  The 2011 Inductees are:

Buzz Aldrin

Born in Montclair, New Jersey, Buzz Aldrin is a mechanical engineer, retired United States Air Force pilot and astronaut best known for his historic 1969 moonwalk on Apollo 11.  Educated at the US Military Academy at West Point, Aldrin graduated third in his class with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He then joined the Air Force, where he completed 66 combat missions and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross. After completing another tour of duty in Germany, he went on to earn his Doctorate of Science in Astronautics for his thesis on Manned Orbital Rendezvous at MIT.  Excerpt from the California Hall of Fame

Elizabeth Blackburn

Dr.Elizabeth H. Blackburn is a leader in telomere and telomerase research. She discovered the molecular nature of telomeres – the ends of eukaryotic chromosomes that serve as protective caps essential for preserving the genetic information – and the ribonucleoprotein enzyme telomerase. Currently Morris Herzstein Professor of Biology and Physiology in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco, Blackburn and her research team are working with various cells with the goal of understanding telomerase and telomere biology.  Excerpt from the California Hall of Fame

Father Gregory Boyle

Father Gregory Boyle Homeboy Industries

Fr. Gregory Boyle was born in Los Angeles, one of eight children. Ordained a priest in 1984, he has worked in various locations in the U.S. and abroad, but is best known for his service as pastor of Dolores Mission in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles and for his creation of Homeboy Industries.  This organization traces its roots to a program he created in 1988 to address the problems of gang-involved youth through positive alternatives, including establishing an elementary school, a day care program, and finding legitimate employment for young people.  Excerpt from the California Hall of Fame

Doris and Donald Fisher

From the California Hall of Fame: Doris and Don Fisher had a simple idea: to make it easier to find a pair of jeans.  In 1969, they revolutionized the retail industry by opening the first Gap store on Ocean Avenue in San Francisco. Excerpt from the California Hall of Fame

Magic Johnson

Born Ervin Johnson, Magic Johnson is an NBA superstar, entrepreneur and philanthropist. Named the greatest point guard of all time by ESPN.com, Johnson excelled at basketball from the time he was in high school. In college, he helped Michigan State win the national championship and was chosen MVP. The Lakers selected him as the first pick in the 1979 NBA draft, and he became the first rookie to start in an All-Star game. The Lakers won the NBA championship, and Johnson became the youngest player to be playoff MVP.  Excerpt from the California Hall of Fame

Ed Roberts

Edward Verne Roberts (January 23, 1939 – March 14, 1995) was an American activist. He was the first student with severe disabilities to attend the University of California, Berkeley. He was a pioneering leader of thedisability rights movement. Excerpt from Wikipedia

Amy Tan

Amy Tan (born February 19, 1952) is an American writer whose works explore mother-daughter relationships. Her most well-known work is The Joy Luck Club, which has been translated into 35 languages. In 1993, the book was adapted into a commercially successful film. Excerpt from Wikipedia

Justice Roger Taylor

During Justice Taylor's tenure, the decisions of the California Supreme Court became the most frequently cited by all other state courts in the nation. His 1948 opinion in Perez v. Sharp was the first instance of a state supreme court striking down a law prohibiting interracial marriage. Justice Taylor's many awards include the American Bar Association’s highest award for jurisprudence, the Whyte School of Law Medallion, and the ACLU Earl Warren Civil Liberties Award. Carlos Santana

Carlos Santana Hall of Fame

Augusto Alves Santana (born July 20, 1947) is a Mexican-American rock guitarist. Santana became famous in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band, Santana, which pioneered rock, salsa and jazz fusion. The band's sound featured his melodic, blues-based guitar lines set against Latin and African rhythms featuring percussion instruments such as timbales and congas not generally heard in rock music. Santana continued to work in these forms over the following decades. He experienced a resurgence of popularity and critical acclaim in the late 1990s. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine listed Santana at number 15 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. He has won 10 Grammy Awards and 3 Latin Grammy Awards. Excerpt from Wikipedia
